     On continuing our very series on Navratri about Nav-Durga, here we are with Maa Durga second energy manifestation, who is worshipped on second day of Navratri - Maa Brahmcharini. Excited to know more?

Depiction

        The second day of Navratri celebrations is dedicated to Mata Brahmacharini, Goddess of Penance. She wears a white saree and holds Kamandal in her left hand and rosary on the does penance or tapasya known as Brahmcharini Maa. Hibiscus and lotus flowers are used as garland for the Goddess. She is always represented as barefooted. 

Symbolism and Names

        The word "Brahm" refers to Tapa and her name means -the one who performs Tapa. Goddess Brahmcharini is also known as Devi Yogni and Tapswini. Brahmacharini Mata is believed to bestow her devotees with wisdom, knowledge and deep devotion in supreme.

Goddess Brahmacharini signifies love, loyalty, wisdom, and knowledge. The facade of Maa Brahmacharini symbolizes simplicity.

Story

        According to the Hindu scriptures, Maa parvati took birth as the daughter of Himalaya and she strictly penanced to marry Lord Shiva. First she thrived over fruits and flowers only for thousand years. Secondly, she sustained over herbs only for hundred years and then for three thousands yeaars she just ate torn leaves from Bilba Patra.

Over time she even stopped eating bilva leaves and continued a strict penance without water or food for thousands of years because of her strict penance she became so feeble that even Saptrishi, all gods and deities became involved and blessed the Goddess by saying that all her wishes will be granted as soon as possible. Because of her tough penance. Goddess Parvati is also known as Aparna and Brahmcharini.

Importance

        The worship of Maa Brahmacharini, the goddess of sacrifice, penance, devotion of one's life to obtaining knowledge, wisdom, intellectual brilliance, and emotional balance. Maa Brahmacharini is a female scholar dedicated to the gaining knowledge about the supreme. This colour is supposed to represent rebirth, regeneration, nature, and renewed life.

This identification of the goddess is considered to have originated from the mythology of Parvati, who took immense penance in order to win back her husband Shiva after he fired his anger on Kamadeva. As a result, this form of the goddess also stands for intense devotion and implacable devotion. Maa Brahmcharini is the goddess of Sacral Chakra (Swadhishthana Chakra) and she is the ruler of Mars (Mangal).

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी रूपेण संस्थिता।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Brahmcharini Rupen Sansthita 

Namastasyay Namastasyay Namastasyay Namo Namah

 


दधाना कर पद्माभ्याम अक्षमाला कमण्डलू।

देवी प्रसीदतु मई ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा।।

देवी ब्रह्मचारिण्यै नमः

Dadhana Kara Padmabhyamakshamala Kamandalu,

Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmcharinyanuttama.

Ohm Devi Brahmchariyane Namah.
